Meet Richmond'sAble Woman
Taking the "dis" out of disability.
Vinceretta Hicks turns a lifetime of being told she was "different" into a mission of courage — teaching children that they are capable, valued, and never alone.
A voice for those who feel unseen
A Richmond native, Vinceretta Hicks has made it her life's mission to spread awareness about bullying and suicide prevention — and to remind every child that being different is not the same as being less.
She is the founder of Don't Label Me, I'm Able Inc.™, a nonprofit organization that works to show children that although they may be different, they should never give up on life. As "Able Woman," she engages children across all spaces — school presence, private groups, and public events.
Growing up, Vinceretta was bullied by peers and shamed even within her own family. Today she uses that very voice to teach children to embrace exactly who they are.
Don't Label Me, I'm Able Inc.™
Don't Label Me, I'm Able Inc.™ is dedicated to spreading awareness on bullying and suicide — two areas that are greatly affecting our youth. The nonprofit was created and founded by Vinceretta Hicks, a native of Richmond, Virginia, and works to reduce and prevent bullying, as well as stop suicide.
Hicks, also known as Able Woman, is a disabled woman who has lived through and survived bullying; and with the growing rates of suicide, she has now made it her life's mission to save the life of at least one child. In this diverse world, Don't Label Me, I'm Able Inc.™ promotes inclusion, self-love, and kindness. It engages children in various group activities across all spaces — school presence, private groups, and public events — and provides help for those in need, those who are the bully or being bullied, and those who may be at risk of suicide.
Don't Label Me, I'm Able Inc.™ encourages children to Be A BESTIE, Not a Bully™. We say YES to kindness, YES to learning empathy, and YES to accepting others NO MATTER WHAT — because we are all wonderfully made.
Funds raised go toward funding events and providing financial assistance to children and families in need. Funds also go toward purchasing The Adventures of Able Woman and Able Woman Meets Her Worst Enemy — both written by founder Vinceretta Hicks — which are donated to individuals and organizations. These two children's books explore bullying and suicide in a way that provides hope to readers.
